SMILE'S VISION

Partners in the SMILE initiative are establishing collaborative ecosystems among research institutions, governments, nonprofits, communities, and industry partners to drive regional economic development and investment in Southern Arizona communities.

By developing and furthering advanced regional mining operations, SMILE contributes to the economic vitality of numerous Arizona counties that host industrial operations in their towns.

HOW IT WORKS

Through strategic investments of financial and human capital  in key focus areas, the SMILE Engine is:

• Advancing mining technologies through robotics, AI, and machine automation research & development (R&D).
• Filling critical workforce gaps through training and degree programs, on-the-job training, and certifications in high-demand technical skills.

• Spawning successful venture capital investments in mining and mineral-related start-ups, and supporting R&D through university mining labs and industrial proving grounds.

SMILE outcomes

• Through training, internships & apprenticeships, and certifications in transferrable skills, SMILE is developing the workforce of the future and contributing to gainful employment and lifelong, sustainable careers for thousands of Arizona citizens.  

• In partnership with school systems, chambers of commerce, and local and state governments, SMILE is establishing a thriving lifestyle and economic ecosystem that enriches the lives of all Arizonans.

• Through advanced research and direct investments in entrepreneurship, SMILE is creating the "Silicon Valley of Mining" in Arizona, the largest mineral-producing state in the nation.
